The Revolving Door

So school does not start for Jennifer and Michael until Tuesday. Remember the good ol' days of 6 weeks of Christmas vacation? Michael had wisdom teeth removed on Monday. He then went to CS on Tuesday. Jennifer left for CS on Wednesday. Matt came home on Friday. Michael came home on Friday. Jennifer came home on Saturday. My sister and nephew came down on Saturday. We went to see Spring Awakening and went to dinner downtown to celebrate Michael's 19th. Matt went back to CS on Saturday night. Debbie and Drew went back to Longview on Sunday morning. Jennifer went back to CS this afternoon. Matt is on his way to LC from CS. Michael is still here; he has a postop appointment with the oral surgeon tomorrow. Michael will go back to CS tomorrow afternoon. Matt will go back to CS tomorrow night. I will go to bed early (assuming, of course, that I get report cards finished) ! :)

December 2008

Since December is over and things are supposed to have settled down I guess it is time for a December update.  Actually things have not yet settled down.  Jennifer is still home for a few days before she returns to College Station.  Michael is home until the weekend with the grandpuppies.  He is having his wisdom teeth out Tuesday.  The grandpuppies have been having some digestive problems; I think it may have something to do with their diet of books, the banister, and Polly Pockets.

We went to my parents on Christmas Day.  Apparently we had a Twinkie contest.  Who do you think the winner is?

January:

I have finally created a Facebook page.  I hadn't done it before because I was always convinced that it was a site for kids, but I have realized that's not the case anymore.  I have more friends on Facebook than on Xanga.  It's just going to be a matter of do I really care that John posted a comment on Susie's wall.

Michael's 19th birthday is Saturday.  My sister and nephew are coming down and we are all going to go see Spring Awakening before the kids all go back to school.  I'm looking forward to it; should be a lot of fun!

We are just plugging along at school.  We don't have another day off until Spring Break in March.  Martin Luther King day is a weather makeup day for us because of Ike.

Paradigm Shift

So,  I flew to Nashville this weekend for a surprise party for my cousin.  He is turning 50.  I am really not old enough to have a cousin that's 50, but anyway....  I was visiting with one of my cousins who is "my age" (just a year older).  She was telling me about who was at the party.  She pointed out this set of twins, Zeke and Zach, their mother, and then their grandmother.  She then proceeded to tell me that the grandmother rode the school bus with her.  I could not understand why this woman would be on the bus with my cousin.  When I asked she replied, "to go to school".  I just did not understand why a grandmother would would have ridden the bus with my cousin.  I was still thinking this lady is a grandmother; she is a generation ahead of us.  Then my cousin explained that this grandma is the same age we are!!!  That was the first time I'd thought of myself as the Mimi generation!!  OMG; I have always considered myself the parent generation, but there in that room I discovered that even though I don't yet have grandchildren, I am of the Mimi generation!!!  My cousin told me that I needed to take a good long look in the mirror and face reality!  I suddenly feel so old!!!

Normal???

Well, as of 10:00 last night we have cable tv and internet again.  I guess things are "back to normal".  It's just very hard for me to believe that things are normal anywhere.  I know people in other areas of the state and country are going about business as normal, but we are on day number 9 of no school and won't start back until Monday.  There are still many people with no power.  Last weekend we helped a friend from church move all her belongings out of a condo that is no longer inhabitable.  I took some pictures around the neighborhood while we were there.

The orange spray paint says "UNSAFE" written, I assume, by the people who came to check the area after the storm went through.

This is what most of the area looked like; looked like a bomb had gone off.

In my world it is hard to believe that things are normal anywhere.  The good news is that people really seem to be rallying around and helping each other.  Grocery stores are pretty well stocked now; the PODs are no longer necessary in most areas of town, and we've had a cool front.  I'm not hearing much grumbling and complaining; people are just trying to get "back to normal".

Ike stinks!

Your tax dollars are hard at work.  We got a phone call from FEMA telling us that they would pay for us to stay in a hotel for up to a month if we needed it.  Fortunately we don't and I guess without actually coming to the house they wouldn't know that.  There are people only about a mile away who probably do need to stay in a hotel for a month.  Here are some pictures from our neighborhood (just a few small ones because we don't have cable or high speed internet yet so I am using dial up, but we do have electricity!)

Here is what it looks like about a mile from here (Jim and I rode our bikes to take these pictures).

This is down near Clear Lake Shores.

So we were very blessed!  We lost power for several days so we had to completely empty the fridge, but we aren't emptying our house of items destroyed by water.  The theme at the grocery store yesterday had to be "you get what you get and you don't throw a fit"!  Randall's had no fresh produce (unless you count kale and ginger root), no butter, no bread....  They got milk while I was there and we all just lined up and took a gallon; they didn't even have time to put it in the cooler.  We have the most random groceries, but hey we have food to eat!

Yesterday we went up to one of the PODs in our area and helped National Guardsmen distribute water, ice, and MREs.  We went back today but they had more volunteers than they needed.  We helped the Salvation Army distribute meals for awhile but left when things slowed down.  It is very good to see people helping each other and very little complaining!
